“Time” magazine places Mljet among 10 most beautiful islands in the world. Jacques Cousteau considered this part of the Adriatic Islands to be one of the most intriguing and beautiful diving places, not only in Croatia, but in the world. In 1960, the northwest part of the island was proclaimed a National Park due to its exceptional floral, geological, historical, scenery and cultural value. Especially attractive is the island of St. Mary on the Veliko Jezero, along with its ancient Benedictine monastery dating from 12th century. Unesco added it onto the register of world`s heritage sites.
